Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do cloth masks really work?

    • Answer: Yes! The CDC is currently recommending that everyone wear a cloth mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

  • Why are masks needed with the COVID-19 outbreak?

    • Experts say the homemade masks won’t protect someone from getting sick, but they can help prevent the spread of the disease by those with the virus.

  • The figure illustrates the filtering ability of N-95 masks against the droplets that could be carrying the coronavirus.

  • What is the difference between normal masks and N-95 masks?

    • Both normal masks and N-95 masks have their purposes; however, N-95 masks are necessary to supply to our healthcare workers treating the COVID-19 pandemic. These masks have a filtering system that is able to filter 95% of the airborne particles, while the normal surgical masks are not able to filter these particles.

  • Why do cancer patients need masks the most?

    • Many cancer patients go through additional therapy in an attempt to rid the body of the particular cancer. However, chemotherapy kills all cells, even those that are not cancer cells. This kill-all approach often achieves the intended effect of destroying cancer or at least shrinking its size. Despite this, side effects such as a compromised immune system, and loss of body hair are common, and usually these effects are not deadly. However, with the COVID-19 outbreak, the virus will be even more deadly to those cancer patients who contract it, because their weakened immune system struggles against the deadly virus. Thus, it is imperative that we provide these cancer patients with the masks that they NEED, in order to save lives.
